Question:

: I now have two jack russell's. the male is 12 and the female is 2 years old. i'd like to get a third, and i want to know if you have a suggestion as to gender and age of a third dog?

Response:

Dear Kate,

Because of the same-sex aggression and the "two's company, three's a crowd" issues, bringing in a third JRT will be difficult...if not impossible. A female will likely challenge your female and a male will likely challenge your male. If you get a pup, your two young terriers may be inclined to gang up on your senior terrier. Adopting an older terrier who has perhaps gotten along with another same-sex JRT does not guarantee that he/she will get along with your two terriers.

I understand your wanting to get another JRT but in my opinion, your 12 year old male should be able to live the rest of his life with your family without having to "fight" for his right to do so. :-)

Best,
Leslie
