Question:

: I have a darling, nine month old JRT who thoroughly dislikes riding in the car because she gets so ill. I know not to feed her before a trip. She shows no interest in looking out the window. She sits against the seat, or stands forlornly in her crate, and begins to whine before she vomits. I was hoping that she would grow out of this, but it doesn't seem to be the case. I like to take little Judy with my other three year old JRT to obedience and agility classes. Once there, I end up spending the first five minutes of class cleaning up the crate and Judy! I tried dramamine once, per my veterinarian's suggestion, when I drove from NY to Maryland. She only threw up once, but seemed out of sorts later. My big problem is that I would like to show Judy at several upcoming Terrier Trials. Is there something I could give her that wouldn't leave her woozy and crabby?

Response:

Dear Barbara,

The key to dealing with a JRT who gets carsick is to be patient. Most pups vomit while riding in a car; at only 9 months of age, your pup's reaction is normal. With time (not drugs) she will grow out of it.

Again, be patient with your little darling; she needs both time and your understanding to deal with new experiences. :-)
