Question:

: We have a 5 1/2 month old puppy.He'll be 6 mths Nov.8.
: We have him set up to be neutered tomorrow Wed. but he just started obedience classes Mon. He's also doing extremely well in housetraining. Do you think getting him neutered now is a good idea? Will it upset the new routine of obedience training? Should I wait till Dec when classes are over? Will it at this time interfere with his established housetraining? He's so cute and good-natured and I don't want to mess up his being raised properly.
: Thanks, Gail

Hi Gail,

Neutering a male dog is pretty easy stuff and not an invasive type of surgery. Most often your dog goes in, in the morning and comes home that very day. He should be fit as a fiddle for his next obedience class the following Monday.

Glad to hear his housebreaking is going so well, that is great! Now you might have him backslide just a bit once he gets home from the vet, but that will mostly be because of the anesthesia. It takes a bit for it to totally wear off. So don't panic if he has an accident or two just stick to whatever you are doing and go with the flow.

This is the perfect time to have him neutered, getting him done now will almost eliminate any chance of territorial marking, will definitely eliminate roaming for females and you will just have an all around great family pet.

You are doing a great job! Good Luck with your little guy :)
