Question:

: our friends just gave us thier jrt (because they had to move) and they had two kids.we have 3 kids (8yrs,3yrs,&1yr) he has never had any problems with any of thier kids or ours should we be worried about the jrt and our childern our parents have done a little research and seem to be friek out about it because they have talked to behavorist's and they say it is not a good combo. and this web sit says not to have little ones. personally this is a mello dog he loves our other dog we have. and he loves our kids! we love him already too! what do ya all think about this are our parents right? or are we ok.

Response:

Dear Jason,

This website does not recommend the JRT for families with small children because this breed is not "child friendly." Jack Russells have a very low tolerance for tail and ear pulling, toy sharing or being chased or cornered...basic kid stuff. I suspect the behaviorist has seen enough JRT/child problems to have formed the same opinion.

That being said, there are plenty of folks who have successfully raised both JRTs and children in the same household and never had a problem. The bottom line is that it is the parents responsibility to understand the nature of the breed and then take the time to teach both the dog and the child how to treat each other properly.

Since you all are aware that there "can" be problems, you're more likely to take steps to avoid them. In my opinion, that means the little guy and your family will likely be OK. :-)

Good luck,
Leslie
