Question:

: My "Harley" is doing things I just can't comprehend... He's going to be a year in May, and although I haven't had any trouble before, he is driving me crazy. We own a large ranch with lots of exotic animals, and he has developed a habit of chasing the Llamas, I know hunting is inbred, but how do you teach what is ok and not ok to hunt? 2nd Question-- He's developed a habit of chewing-- EVERYTHING, from shoes to table legs, to underwear!! He even brings stuff from outside (sticks, etc.). He has been punished but continues to do these things, even when we are in the SAME room. He has plenty of room to run, and gets lots of mental and physical activities, and loads of love, so I just don't understand.

: Someone please help!!

: Thanks in advance,
: Sassie

Response:

Dear Sassie, You must get busy and teach Harley some basic verbal commands, like Come Here, and Drop It. Punishing him just isn't the same thing. If you haven't thought about Obedience classes, I would do it now. He's a good age to learn quickly. I haven't been around Llamas, but I know some JRT's who thought chasing cows or horses was a lot of fun, and sadly have come to an untimely end from being kicked. So, its worth your terrier's life to teach him that when you call him back, he is to do it without fail. He won't always be so eager to drag things into the house to chew on, so be patient. But DO give him some education! Here's to a long & happy life for Harley. C.P.
