Question:

: My male Jack is only 8 months old. He is 22.5 lbs! I thought he was only supposed to stop at 13 lbs. His parents were only 13 lbs a piece. He is not over wieght, proportionally. His length is directly proportional to his weight. He is constantly outside running around, and his legs and chest are very muscular. Do I just have a mutant JRT?? :)

Response:

Hi Brian,

That does sound pretty big for a JRT but a lot depends on the bone and structure of your terrier. I have two shorty jacks and they tend to run heavier than their square counterparts. One of my terriers is much denser in bone and he is all muscle and usually weighs in at around 15 pounds and he is just over 11 inches at the shoulder. He is not overweight.

Your dog might be getting his size from a relative somewhere down the lines of his parents.

The general rule (and there are always exceptions) for your square terrier is approximately 1 pound per inch of height give or take.

Hope this helps!

Marie
